Benefits of Pomegranate Juice

Have you eaten a pomegranate? The fruit is featured in Greek mythology in the story of Persephone, daughter of the harvest goddess Demeter. Hades, the lord of the underworld, kidnapped the beautiful maiden. Because she ate a few pomegranate seeds before being rescued, she had to spend several months every year in the underworld with him. According to the myth, that?s when the earth was forced to endure winter. http://www.mythicarts.com/writing/Persephone.html

Pomegranate juice represents another of the foods recently touted for
its health benefits. In some clinical studies, pomegranate juice has been shown to be of significant benefit, especially in the prevention of heart disease. To start, a glass of pomegranate juice contains about 40% of the US Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA) of Vitamin C. It also has Vitamin A, E and folic acid in good quantities.

Further, pomegranate juice has excellent antioxidant properties. It has about three times more antioxidants ounce for ounce than does red wine or green tea. Many people also enjoy its rich taste, making it a welcome beverage.

Pomegranate juice has been shown to work well as a blood thinner. Some research has shown it may be an excellent agent for promoting blood flow to the heart. It also has been shown to reduce plaque in the arteries, and to raise "good" levels of cholesterol while helping lower "bad" cholesterol.

This preliminary research suggests that pomegranate juice may be helpful in preventing heart disease, heart attacks and stroke. Most physicians are quick to point out pomegranate juice should be just one aspect of a healthy diet and exercise program. Pomegranate juice alone would probably not cure or completely prevent heart disease.

Some research has also evaluated the antioxidant nature of pomegranate juice and its usefulness in fighting certain forms of cancer. Pomegranate juice has been tentatively shown to reduce incidence of breast and skin cancer. It has also been tested and shown to slow the growth of prostate cancer in mice.

Another interesting study has evaluated pomegranate juice and osteoarthritis. Pomegranate juice tends to act as an inhibitor on enzymes responsible for damaging cartilage. These studies applied extract of pomegranate directly onto damaged cartilage. More research would have to examine a cause and effect relationship between oral ingestion of pomegranate juice and reduction in cartilage deterioration.

However, early studies on pomegranate juice suggest it is surely healthy to drink. The fruit can be quite fun to eat as well. There are numerous pomegranate juice products available, many quite highly priced because of the health craze surrounding pomegranate juice. It is likely if continued studies show promising health benefits, more manufacturers of pomegranate juice will emerge and help ease prices through competition.

For the first time in my life I began consistently (for at least 3 months) having high blood pressure problems. After taking just 1.5 oz. daily of pomegranate juice for only a week my stats dropped from 143/93 to 122/79. Today they were even lower: 111/72. I am impressed!

15-16 pomegranates = 1 oz.

I had 20% blockage of carotoid artery on one side and 60% on the other. I religiously took 1 oz of pomegranate juice concentrate (bought at Sam's Wholesale Club) for one year. My checkup one year later with my doctor showed I am 100% clear on both sides. That made a believer of me and I will always take my 1 oz. of Pomegranate juice every morning.

I have been using the concentrated form of pomegranate juice for about a month now, before I started drinking it I was experiencing swelling of my right ankle and foot an a daily basis. I no longer have that problem. I am using the concentrated liquid form.

Hi amishere,

I buy mine at Target or Costco. As I recall, it's about $7 for 2 quarts. (My wife says about $5.) Just make sure its pure pomagranate juice.

Best regards, EngineerGuy

Whole Foods has a store brand that is around $5.00. It's not mixed with any other juices. It tastes great! I've been drinking it for 2 1/2 years. I recently read an article that talked about drug interactions with pomegranate juice. I take Lipitor, and am concerned. I haven't been able to find much information on the internet. Maybe Engineerguy (oh wise one)has an answer, he knows all!

Best wishes, Decodiva

Zeeman's post was excellent, as always. It points out that pomegranate juice has actually improved heart blood flow in heart patients, taking 8 oz/day (about all anyone can afford). My personal guess is that I wouldn't worry about drug interactions as long as the juice is kept to no more than 4-8 oz daily. After all, we know pomegranate is beneficial, and Lipitor is also valuable. Far more important than any interaction, is that we improve our program to meet our health goals. (The interaction could be more important than I am guessing. But we can worry about only so much.)

As to Michelle's question, the pomegranate pills probably are effective. Dr. Fuhrman offers some pomegranate and plant sterol pills to lower cholesterol. Dr. Fuhrman recently changed the formulation of the pill, to include a more effective type of pomegranate concentrate.

Best regards, EngineerGuy

If you haven't looked at the sugar content of fruit juices, take a gander and you'll find out that 30 to 40 grams per serving is not unusual. That's why I was so excited to find Langer's Diet Pomegranate juice at my local Albertsons.
After I did a little research on pomegranates, I was even more excited. While many of you may know some of these facts, the value of pomegranate juice health-wise was completely new to me. To back up a bit, according to the "Nutrition Science News" (3/1/06), pomegranate juice has three times the amount of antioxidant activity than red wine or green tea. Once again, I apologize to those who know this information, but the importance of antioxidants is crucial in hindering disease and slowing down the aging process.

In a study by the American Technian Society from May, 2000, test results on both humans and mice showed that pomegranate juice was significantly useful in treating lesions of the arteries and in reducing "bad" cholesterol.

With all this in mind, as I stated, I was excited about this product before I tasted it. But, as they always say, the proof is in the pudding, or, in this case, in the tasting. Langers Diet Pomegranate is delicious. It's not as sweet as their regular pomegranate juice (which has 30g of sugar per serving) but it leaves no aftertaste and is quite pleasant to the taste. Since I discovered I was diabetic in 1994, drinks that I used to like now taste way too sweet for me. This juice does not.

Langers uses Splenda as the sweetener for this juice. The sugar content from the fruit itself means that an eight ounce serving contains 9g of sugar. If you are a diabetic, you know (or should know) how much sugar you can tolerate. I can speak only for Type 2 diabetics, but this is within the proper range for me if I limit myself to one glass a day. The exchange rate per serving is equal to 1/2 fruit for the diabetics out there.

Besides the benefits already mentioned, this drink also contains 100% of your daily Vitamin C requirements and 20% of your Calcium requirements in an eight ounce serving. One more positive point for Langers Diet Pomegranate juice is that it is extremely low in sodium (10mg per serving) which is great for those with high blood pressure problems (like me.)

There are no sugars, colors, or preservatives added to this juice.

The active ingredients are:

Filtered water, pomegranate juice concentrate, calcium gluconate, calcium lactate, pectin, ascorbic acid, citric acid, natural flavor, acesulfame potassium and sucralose (Spenda brand).

An eight ounce serving contains 40 calories, 0% fat (saturated or trans fat), 0% cholesterol, 10mg sodium, 170 mg potassium and 9g of total carbs.

I paid $2.89 for a 64 fluid ounce bottle of Langers.

Even if you are not diabetic, this juice drink is worth trying. As I wrote above, the benefits of pomegranate juice include fighting disease and slowing the aging process. As I approach 60 in October, that last benefit really appeals to me. And, I have to emphasize that this drink tastes very good.

You can buy Langer's Pomegranate Juice at Albertson's. It's much cheaper than the designer brands you see in the stores.  I buy the Langer's Diet Pomegranate Juice. It only costs $3.39 for 64oz. Drinking only 8oz. per day will greatly improve your overall health.
